New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
