Minister Says MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

A defence official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to avoid discussing secret information in all cars.

Safety Advice for Defence Staff

During a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.

He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The wider defence situation underscores the importance of robust measures and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including transport usage to discussions practices.
