The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
